Riparian forests of Spain's rivers

Forest formations associated with Spanish river courses, whose composition and organization vary with water conditions and other environmental factors; they may have vegetation layers and bands arranged in relation to the river channel.

How it works

Environmental conditions

The water conditions characteristic of these riparian areas influence their vegetation, while their composition and structure also depend on flow regime, temperature, topography, channel size, substrate, salt content in the soil and water, and conservation status.

Distribution and scope

In Spain, riparian vegetation is organized into northern and southern sectors, based on the distribution of hydrophilous forests and shrublands; the types present vary among territories, and island sectors are also recognized.

Structure

At its fullest development, riparian forest has a complex vertical structure, with tree, shrub, herbaceous, liana, and epiphytic layers; relative to the channel, vegetation may form bands, although these are not always clearly distinguishable.

Ecological processes

Water availability and floods contribute to organizing vegetation into bands, while these forests help stabilize riverbanks, filter sediments and chemical substances, accumulate water and sediments, and recharge groundwater.

How to read occurrence data

Linked species are documented examples for a specific area. The list is not complete, and the absence of a species does not prove that it is not present.
