How it works

Environmental conditions

The Paseo de Coches forms the main axis, accompanied by two other axes and cross-paths. Between the routes are small triangular and irregular planting beds, bounded by hedges of Mediterranean species: the “maranyetes”. The Paseo del Obelisco links an oval plaza with a curved pond. Paths, plantings, hedges and water form an arrangement designed as a garden.

Distribution and scope

Ribalta Park is in Castelló de la Plana, in the province of Castellón. It is a historic urban garden influenced by the English Romantic garden, with a wide variety of plants. Its origins lie in the last third of the nineteenth century. This profile describes this particular park, not every green space in Mediterranean cities or a natural woodland.

Structure

The botanical inventory includes deciduous trees such as the European nettle tree (Celtis australis), ginkgo (Ginkgo biloba), pomegranate (Punica granatum) and field elm (Ulmus minor). Evergreen trees include bitter orange (Citrus aurantium), bay laurel (Laurus nobilis), southern magnolia (Magnolia grandiflora) and olive (Olea europaea). This is not a single-species planting. Recorded conifers include Atlas cedar (Cedrus atlantica), Mediterranean cypress (Cupressus sempervirens), Aleppo pine (Pinus halepensis) and yew (Taxus baccata). The European fan palm (Chamaerops humilis), Canary Island date palm (Phoenix canariensis) and date palm (Phoenix dactylifera) also appear. Lower-growing vegetation adds box (Buxus sempervirens), myrtle (Myrtus communis), oleander (Nerium oleander) and laurustinus (Viburnum tinus); ivy (Hedera helix) is also listed. This diversity invites exploration beyond the most conspicuous trees, without confusing a botanical list with a count of individual plants.

Change and care

Responsible observation

Birds recorded in the inventory include the European robin (Erithacus rubecula), common blackbird (Turdus merula), great tit (Parus major), house sparrow (Passer domesticus) and common wood pigeon (Columba palumbus). The list does not give abundances or guarantee a sighting on every visit. As a practical suggestion from FaunaGuide, one walk could compare deciduous and evergreen trees, another palms and conifers, followed by a quiet pause to watch birds. Recording the place and date preserves the context: seeing a species on one visit does not demonstrate that it remains in the park throughout the year.

How to read occurrence data

Linked species are documented examples for a specific area. The list is not complete, and the absence of a species does not prove that it is not present.
