Ecological context
A system, not a backdrop
A guide to the landscape, its changes and ways to care for it. This profile covers a broad habitat type; local data need site-specific research.
Habitat guide
How it works
Environmental conditions
Above 2,200 m, climatic conditions limit tree growth; altitude, aspect, and substrate type are also associated with different types of grassland.
Distribution and scope
This profile is confined to Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park in the Pyrenees, where grasslands are described on sunny slopes, in subalpine areas, and in calcareous and acidic-substrate environments.
Structure
The herbaceous cover includes grasslands dominated by Festuca paniculata on sunny slopes, by Nardus stricta in some subalpine areas, and by Festuca eskia in various high-mountain environments on acidic substrates.
Ecological processes
In subalpine areas where forests have been removed, Nardus grasslands occur; the source describes this relationship for the park but does not detail other formation or maintenance processes.

Change and care
Seasonal changes
In summer, high-mountain meadows are covered in color because of the presence of numerous plants, according to the park's description.
Linked species are documented examples for a specific area. The list is not complete, and the absence of a species does not prove that it is not present.
