Karst system and spring of the Gándara River, Soba (Cantabria)

In Soba, Cantabria, the Gándara River spring is the discharge point of an underground karst system in carbonate rocks. Official information describes focused and diffuse springs, and an independent tracer test confirms that water infiltrated at El Bernacho, Burgos, reaches the Gándara springs.

Habitat guide

How it works

Environmental conditions

The official characterization links the aquifer to permeable carbonate rocks and identifies rainwater infiltration as a recharge pathway; it also describes recharge from rainfall and snowmelt in the system’s high areas.

Distribution and scope

The spring is located in the Sierra de Helguera, in the Cantabrian municipality of Soba; an independent test detected at the Gándara springs water traced from El Bernacho, in Burgos.

Structure

The system includes underground flow through karst cavities and discharge through both focused outlets, including Cueva de la Gándara and Cueva río Chico, and a zone of diffuse spring discharge.

Ecological processes

Infiltration feeds underground flow, which emerges at the source of the Gándara; a tracer test from El Bernacho confirmed a connection with the springs, but did not thereby demonstrate all proposed routes through the network.

How to read occurrence data

Linked species are documented examples for a specific area. The list is not complete, and the absence of a species does not prove that it is not present.
