Freshwater Under the Microscope: Possible Inhabitants, Not an Inventory of a Drop

A drop of freshwater does not have a universal roster of inhabitants. Sources describe groups that live in lakes and rivers—from photosynthetic microorganisms to zooplankton—but do not document what a particular drop contains. They also explain why a microscopic image, or a software program’s label, is not always enough to identify a species.

01

A Drop Is Not a Fixed List

“Freshwater” covers different environments, such as lakes and rivers, and the sources do not provide an analysis of any particular drop. They do describe freshwater plankton: organisms that drift or cannot overcome the current. So here we discuss groups that may occur in those environments, not creatures observed in a sample or an inventory that is always present in every drop.

02

Producers and Consumers at Different Scales

Possible inhabitants include phytoplankton organisms such as green algae, diatoms, and cyanobacteria; there are also flagellated forms. Zooplankton includes consumer organisms and, depending on the group, microscopic or larval stages. “Plankton” describes a way of life in water, not a single kind of living thing: a cell, an organism, and a juvenile stage are not interchangeable concepts.

03

What an Image Shows—and What a Model Adds

A microphotograph documents what fell within the field of view of a particular preparation; by itself, it does not represent all the water from which that preparation came. Computer-based recognition models analyze images and propose detections or identifications, but they are not organisms or direct observations of a different drop. A study of freshwater phytoplankton images evaluated automatic detectors and notes that focusing and magnification conditions also affect the analysis.

04

Identification Is More Than Assigning a Name

Visible shapes can help guide classification, but on their own they do not justify identifying a species. Manual identification requires specialized knowledge and can be affected by subjectivity; automated systems also produce different results depending on the organism and the image. The cited recognition study used images and species from a particular dataset: its results do not certify what is in a sample that was not analyzed.

05

Composition Depends on Place and Time

Freshwater phytoplankton diversity varies with habitat factors such as the size and productivity of the water body and temperature; species interactions and disturbances are also among the explanations studied. Thus, two drops taken from different places or at different times need not contain the same community. Without a sample, a scale, and an identifiable analysis, it is not possible to say which specific organisms are in a particular drop.
