How a Meadow Changes Through the Year: Two Examples from the Sierra Nevada
Snow, snowmelt, and the first shoots set the pace in two California mountain meadows. A National Park Service guide describes Cook’s Meadow in Yosemite; a scientific study examines Dana Meadow. Their findings complement one another, but they are neither an independent replication of the same place nor a universal calendar.
Two Meadows, Not a Universal Calendar
“Meadow” does not refer here to an identical sequence of changes in every grassland. This account follows two examples from the Sierra Nevada in California: Cook’s Meadow, described in a National Park Service guide, and Dana Meadow, studied over three summers in a scientific investigation. The sources offer complementary perspectives, but the findings from Dana do not independently verify every local detail about Cook’s Meadow. (2451; 4689)
Winter Under the Snow
At Cook’s Meadow, grasses and sedges lie beneath several feet of snow in winter. The study of Dana Meadow describes a related mechanism: when a continuous snow cover forms, it insulates the soil, which remains near 0 °C, helping protect organisms that spend the winter there and preventing the soil from drying out. Protection therefore depends not only on the cold, but also on when that snow cover forms. (2451; 4689)
Spring: New Green Growth, Last Year’s Remains
In the description of Cook’s Meadow, new shoots appear rapidly in spring: in about a month, fresh green vegetation hides the brown remains of the previous year. The same guide notes that dense sedges limit the abundance of wildflowers many people expect to find. This is a detail about that wet meadow, not a rule for all meadows or every spring. (2451)
When Snowmelt Brings Growth Earlier
At Dana Meadow, when the snow melts, the soil becomes saturated; plants respond rapidly to available moisture and nutrients and put out green shoots. That response can leave them exposed to late frosts. In the years studied, 2012 and 2013, the first snow-free day came 57–61 days earlier than in 2011; frosts occurred after the snow had retreated. The study recorded these changes at one site and over a specific period, not as a forecast for all meadows. (4689)
Summer: The Landscape Traces Moisture
At Cook’s Meadow, during spring and summer, bands and waves of different shades of green mark wetter and drier areas; the guide links them to flood routes and old channels of the Merced River. Yellow water lilies grow in one of these channels in summer. The meadow’s visible variation reflects local differences in water, but the source does not provide a complete inventory of plants in each season. (2451)
What Can Be Said About Autumn
For autumn, the available information about Cook’s Meadow concerns water, not a seasonal change in vegetation: in October, the Merced River’s flow is less than 1% of its spring peak, with the strongest flow occurring toward the end of May. The guide also explains that each spring, when the river is high, water again occupies an old channel and crosses the trail. These details do not make it possible to infer what the vegetation looks like then. (2451)
A Variable Rhythm, Not a Formula
The Dana Meadow study compared three years and found that the timing of snow disappearance and the occurrence of early frosts matter for ecosystem processes. In that study, average aboveground primary productivity was 39% lower and soil respiration approximately 100% higher in 2012 and 2013 than in 2011. These are findings from that place and those years; they do not support the claim that early snowmelt always produces the same response in other meadows. (4689)
