Observation-guide
How to follow a tree’s leaf buds opening
A green tip and an unfolded leaf are different observations. Record the transition without imposing a timetable on the tree.
What to look for in a bud
Opening need not begin simultaneously on every branch. Nature’s Notebook distinguishes a breaking leaf bud from an unfolded leaf: in the former, a green tip is visible but the leaf base has not yet become exposed where it joins the stalk or stem. In an unfolded leaf, that base is visible. A slightly swollen bud may attract attention, but swelling alone does not meet this definition of bud break. [5442]
A record for each visit
As an adaptation for your notebook, keep a record for the same tree and date every visit. Separate two questions: “Are any leaf buds breaking?” and “Are any leaves unfolded?”. Answer **yes**, **no** or **unsure** independently, using the definitions; do not turn uncertainty into a no. You can add a photograph and a note describing what you saw. If you participate in Nature’s Notebook, also consult the species instructions: this outline does not replace its datasheet. [5442]
When phases overlap
A tree may carry closed buds, breaking buds and unfolded leaves together. Answering yes to both questions is therefore not contradictory: they describe overlapping processes rather than mutually exclusive boxes. Repeated observations let you follow that transition in the chosen individual. Do not infer an opening date for every tree nearby from one record, or assign a particular cause to changes you have merely observed. The initial aim is to describe the process, not predict its timetable. [5442]

This story synthesises the references below and separates possible observations from conclusions that would need more evidence. It does not present original FaunaGuide fieldwork or replace expert identification.
