Leaf damage: what can and cannot be measured

What the study compared
A study by the TropHerb network examined a dataset of more than 50,000 leaves from 209 tropical plant species, sampled between 2017 and 2023. It compared visual estimates, digital image-analysis tools, and deep learning to quantify damage. [3556]
Methods leave their own mark
In that study, visual estimates tended to overestimate damage, while deep learning tended to underestimate it. ImageJ and EBImage produced reliable, similar results from digital images, especially when damage was scattered across the center of the leaf blade.
