In a vineyard landscape in southwestern Germany, toads from ponds more contaminated with pesticides produced more eggs, but a smaller proportion were fertilized and fewer tadpoles survived. In Switzerland, BfHV1 herpesvirus was detected in free-living specimens and associated with proliferative dermatitis.

Ecology

Description and characteristics

Pesticide exposure was studied in breeding pairs from five ponds in a vineyard landscape in the Palatinate, southwestern Germany. Pairs from more contaminated ponds produced more eggs but had lower fertilization rates; lower survival and smaller size were also recorded in tadpoles at Gosner stage 25. These results apply to the populations and conditions examined in that study.

Proliferative dermatitis was investigated in free-living toads in Switzerland in relation to BfHV1 herpesvirus. Molecular testing detected the virus in specimens with skin lesions and also in five of nine live toads without lesions visible to the naked eye, sampled in 2017.
